Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is facing mounting pressure from within his own party to support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. A group of 10 senior Conservative MPs, including former cabinet ministers, have accused Israel of brutalizing the civilian Palestinian population, which they argue will only fuel further extremism in the region. In a letter to Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, these MPs state that the case for an immediate ceasefire is unequivocal. As Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces questioning from MPs on the Liaison Committee, the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel is expected to be a prominent topic of discussion.
The letter signed by the 10 Tory MPs, which includes prominent figures such as former education secretary Kit Malthouse and former environment secretary George Eustice, highlights the disproportionate and indiscriminate nature of Israel’s actions. According to the MPs, the conflict has resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of civilians, with close to two million forcibly displaced. They draw attention to the shocking number of women and children who have been killed, emphasizing the unacceptable loss of innocent lives.
Israel’s administration, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, is currently facing mounting international criticism for the high number of civilian casualties. The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s attack in October, has devastated much of northern Gaza and forced 85% of its population to flee their homes. Aid groups have issued warnings about the spiraling humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing bombardment. The recent United Nations General Assembly vote, in which a vast majority supported a ceasefire, further highlights the global consensus on the urgent need to end the violence. Disappointingly, both the US and the UK abstained from supporting the resolution, adding to the frustration felt by the Tory MPs who penned the letter.
While Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron recently called for a sustainable ceasefire, he stopped short of advocating for an immediate cessation of hostilities. This falls short of expectations, as many pro-Palestinian campaigners and the MPs themselves have been demanding an immediate halt to the violence. The Tory group expresses their dismay at the UK’s abstention on the UN resolution, particularly when countries like France, Canada, and Australia supported it. Paul Bristow, a Tory MP who was dismissed from his government post for calling for a ceasefire, affirms that there are many more MPs behind the scenes who support the push for an immediate ceasefire.
The urgency for an immediate ceasefire gains further momentum with the warning from former defence secretary Ben Wallace. In his article, Wallace cautions that Israel risks losing its legal and moral authority if it continues its “killing rage” in Gaza. He appeals to all sides to strive for a two-state solution. Rishi Sunak acknowledges Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks but emphasizes the importance of doing so in accordance with humanitarian law. The prime minister also emphasizes that too many civilian lives have been lost, underscoring the need to end the conflict as soon as possible.
The Tory MPs who wrote the letter to Lord Cameron also draw attention to the imminent risk of disease and starvation faced by the Palestinian population. They highlight the fact that Palestinians are being confined to increasingly smaller areas, creating conditions that contravene the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The MPs argue that it is unconscionable to exempt Gaza from the rules and obligations set forth by these international accords. Furthermore, they express their anguish and dismay at the position taken by the UK government following the atrocities of October 7th. They assert that flattening Gaza and killing innocent Palestinians in pursuit of Hamas does not serve the long-term interests of either the UK or Israel. The MPs stress that military means alone cannot effectively address the threat posed by terrorist organizations like Hamas and secure the safe return of Israeli hostages. They caution that the brutalization of the Palestinian civilian population will only breed further extremism.
The urgency for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is clear. The actions taken by Israel must be subjected to scrutiny, with an emphasis on upholding humanitarian law and avoiding the loss of civilian lives. International pressure on Israel to halt the ongoing violence continues to mount, with prominent figures within the UK Conservative Party joining the call for an end to the brutalization of the Palestinian civilian population. It is imperative for the international community to collectively address the crisis in Gaza and work towards a lasting peace that respects the rights and lives of all individuals involved.
