By using the BAT to identify signs and assess risks, steps can be taken to prevent burnout from occurring.

The BAT utilizes data collected from 493 adults to calculate a score for specific symptoms associated with burnout. By comparing these scores to a national average from seven different countries, the tool can determine the level of burnout risk for an individual. This information is crucial in enabling both employees and employers to take proactive measures to address the issue and prevent long-term consequences.

Research conducted by psychologist Leon De Beer and his colleagues at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has highlighted several factors that increase the risk of burnout. Unrealistically high expectations, rapid institutional change, low self-esteem, and a lack of opportunities are among the key contributors to burnout. These factors can manifest in symptoms such as exhaustion, mental distancing, and difficulty regulating emotions, ultimately impacting an individual’s overall well-being.

Recognizing the signs of burnout and initiating treatments early on is crucial in ensuring a positive outcome. The researchers emphasize that addressing burnout through individual treatment is only effective if the underlying workplace factors are also addressed. Employers play a vital role in creating a supportive environment that promotes employee well-being and prevents burnout from occurring.
