OpenAI has recently responded to a foundational claim made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a lawsuit filed against the startup. As OpenAI works on commercializing its ChatGPT chatbot and artificial intelligence models, it is facing multiple legal battles, including the one initiated by Musk. Last week, OpenAI dismissed Musk’s complaint by criticizing it in a memo to employees and sharing emails dating back to the startup’s early days.
Elon Musk alleges a breach of contract in the lawsuit, referring to a supposed 2015 “founding agreement” between himself and two other OpenAI co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. This agreement supposedly outlined the nonprofit nature of the AI lab and the commitment to not withhold information for commercial reasons. However, OpenAI has refuted the existence of any such agreement with Musk, calling it a fabrication and asserting that Musk’s claims are unfounded.
OpenAI has dismissed Musk’s claims as frivolous and has requested the court to categorize the case as complex due to its involvement with AI and the span of almost a decade. In response to Musk’s assertion regarding OpenAI’s plan to transition to a for-profit organization in 2017, OpenAI stated that Musk had initially supported this move. Moreover, OpenAI highlighted Musk’s involvement with his own AI lab, X.AI, and the release of the Grok chatbot.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has gained significant traction with 100 million weekly users as of November. This success has seemingly sparked Musk’s interest in achieving similar technological advancements for himself, leading to the legal dispute with OpenAI.
