White House officials are steadfast in their support for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin amid concerns about his delayed communication regarding an urgent hospitalization. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed there are no intentions to replace Austin, and he will retain his position.
Austin was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on January 1 due to post-surgery complications from a procedure on December 22. The White House was informed on January 4, three days after his ICU admission.
Austin’s undisclosed hospitalization coincided with significant U.S. national security decisions, including military activities in the Middle East. On January 4, the Pentagon executed a drone strike in Baghdad against an Iran-supported militia leader. Discussions about possible strikes against Iran-backed Houthis were also ongoing due to their attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Austin’s non-transparency has elicited bipartisan criticism from the House Armed Services Committee, demanding greater clarity on his undisclosed hospital stay. Some, like Representative Elise Stefanik, have called for his resignation and a Congressional inquiry.
President Joe Biden, however, stands by Austin, affirming his “complete confidence” in him after a recent phone call. Although the White House plans to revise communication protocols for enhanced transparency, Biden does not plan to dismiss Austin.
Austin has accepted responsibility for the communication lapse but hasn’t revealed his surgery details or the delay’s reasons. In a recent statement, Austin admitted the need for improved public information, committing to greater transparency.
As the situation evolves, Austin is urged to address these transparency concerns to ensure trust and openness within the administration, while the White House and Congress seek clarity and accountability.
