Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla to Return Next Season: Team President Brad Stevens

Boston Celtics’ head coach Joe Mazzulla will be returning next season, according to team president Brad Stevens. Stevens praised Mazzulla’s leadership skills and accountability and expressed his confidence in his ability to continue learning and improving. Mazzulla, who took over after coach Ime Udoka was suspended, led the team to a 57-25 record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference in his first season.

Assistant Coaches Leaving

Three Celtics assistant coaches, Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles, and Mike Mose, are reportedly leaving to rejoin Udoka, who was recently named head coach of the Houston Rockets. However, Stevens stated that the Celtics plan to add at least one assistant coach with extensive NBA experience to the bench this summer to fill the vacant spot left by Damon Stoudamire, who left to become Georgia Tech’s coach in March.

Roster Changes

Although the Celtics will always monitor the league landscape for potential additions, Stevens expressed his satisfaction with the team’s existing core and stated that they do not plan to make any major changes to the roster. However, there are decisions that need to be made this offseason involving Jaylen Brown, who is eligible to sign a five-year supermax extension on July 1, and restricted free agent Grant Williams. Stevens declined to speak specifically on these decisions due to NBA rules that restrict what executives can say about players with pending contracts.

Stevens did say that he has had “nothing but great conversations” with Brown and that the team wants him to stay. He also praised Williams as a good player who got caught in a numbers situation regarding his reduced time in the rotation this season. Stevens believes that Williams can add value to any team and emphasized that the team’s focus and priority is their foundation and core.
