The U.S. recently made a formal accusation against Russia for using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops. This led to the announcement of additional sanctions on Russian individuals and entities. According to the U.S. State Department, Russia violated the Chemical Weapons Convention by using the choking agent chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces, which is strictly prohibited by the convention. These accusations are serious and have led to further tensions between the two countries.
The Kremlin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov dismissed these accusations as unfounded and unsupported. He stated that Russia has always been committed to its obligations under international law, including the prohibition of chemical weapons. Chloropicrin, the agent in question, was previously used as a poison gas in World War I but is now primarily used as an insecticide in agriculture. Its effects on the respiratory tract can be devastating, causing injury and even death to those exposed to it.
Both Ukraine and Russia have been accusing each other of using chemical weapons in the conflict. In February, Ukraine claimed that Russia used chemical weapons in over 200 attacks in a single month. Similarly, Russia has accused Ukraine of using such weapons as well. However, neither party has provided concrete evidence to support their claims. The use of tear gas, which is also prohibited in warfare, has been another point of contention between the two countries.
The use of chemical weapons violates the Chemical Weapons Convention, a global treaty that has been in effect since 1997. This treaty prohibits the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons by its signatories. Both Russia and Ukraine are among the 193 countries that have ratified the convention. The U.S. has condemned Russia’s actions as a blatant disregard for international law and its obligations under the convention. The use of such weapons has drawn parallels to previous incidents involving the poisoning of Kremlin opponents with nerve agents.
