It was a normal day for Gail Auricht until she made a spine-chilling discovery in her fridge. Lurking in the water and ice dispenser was a massive red-bellied black snake measuring approximately 80 centimeters (31 inches). This unexpected visitor sent shivers down her spine, especially since her son had been bitten by a venomous snake when he was just six years old. The trauma was all too real for Gail, who managed to keep her composure and sought help from a professional snake catcher. The incident, which occurred on January 13 in the Adelaide Hills of Australia, quickly drew attention both locally and nationally.
Although this snake may have garnered the spotlight, it is not an isolated incident. In other parts of Australia, sightings of red-bellied black snakes have been reported in peculiar places. One took refuge under a restaurant’s coffee machine, while another boldly hitched a ride on a Rural Fire Service vehicle. As these incidents unfold, it becomes evident that these renowned reptiles have a knack for unexpected adventures.
Red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus) are a familiar sight on Australia’s eastern coast. Sporting a glossy black back and a vibrant, colorful underbelly, they possess a venomous bite but are generally non-aggressive unless provoked. Their diet consists mainly of frogs, lizards, small mammals, and even other snakes of their own kind. While there have been no documented cases of fatalities resulting from their bite, their venom can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle weakness.
Gail recounted her shocking experience with the snake hanging from her fridge’s ice outlet. Initially mistaking the hissing sound for an air compressor, she was taken aback when she spotted the snake struggling to free itself. “I could only see the bottom half of the snake at first sighting, and it was using a lot of force because it was managing to pull the door which was setting the [fridge] alarm off,” she shared in an interview with the ABC’s Daniel Keane. How did the snake end up in such an unlikely place?
Snakes, unable to internally regulate their body temperature, seek shelter from extreme weather conditions. As a result, they often find their way into unsuspecting human habitats. With the warming climate in Australia, snakes in search of warmth or water can appear in unexpected places. They bask in the sun as temperatures rise or, as one startled driver learned in 2018, take refuge in the warmth of a car’s engine. When the weather becomes too hot, they seek cooler environments such as behind air conditioners, under refrigerators, in toilet bowls, under barbecues, or within crevices in retaining walls. As temperatures continue to soar across certain regions of Australia, encounters between humans and snakes are becoming more common.
Snake catcher Simon Hempel shed some light on the unusual encounter inside Gail’s fridge. With 25 years of experience, he had caught snakes in various unexpected locations but never in a dispenser. He confidently declared, “That will probably be the one and only, I would say. I don’t think I’ll ever get one in there again.” The recent combination of hot weather and heavy rain made his job even more challenging, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of these encounters. Fortunately, he was able to safely remove the snake without causing harm to either the reptile or the occupants of the home.
When faced with a snake encounter, it is crucial to take appropriate precautions. Experts recommend keeping doors and windows closed, securely storing food and rubbish, and immediately seeking professional assistance if a snake is spotted. Snake catchers play a vital role in relocating these reptiles to ensure the well-being of both humans and snakes.
As Australia grapples with rising temperatures, these encounters between humans and snakes are likely to become more frequent. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between wildlife and human habitation. The uninvited visitor in Gail’s fridge is a startling anecdote, cautioning us to be more aware of our surroundings and take necessary steps to coexist peacefully with the natural world.
