James Gunn recently took to social media to shut down a fan conspiracy theory that he always planned to remove Henry Cavill from the DCEU. Amid working on the new Superman film and the second season of Peacemaker, Gunn found the time to address fan inquiries regarding his intentions for the superhero universe.
A fan recently shared a quote from Nathan Fillion about how he found out he was cast as Green Lantern in the new DC film set to release in 2025. Fillion mentioned how he was informed about his casting during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiere party, not after The Suicide Squad premiere as some fans had speculated. This misunderstanding led fans to believe that Gunn had been planning a DCEU reboot since 2021, which Gunn clarified was not the case.
In a statement on social media platform Threads, Gunn made it clear that he had no intention of replacing Cavill as Superman when he directed The Suicide Squad. He emphasized that his involvement with DC Studios was a recent development, and any decisions regarding the casting of Superman were made after he and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs in October 2022. Gunn questioned the logic behind the conspiracy theory, stating that it made no sense for him to lie about his plans for Superman.
Despite Cavill reprising his role as Superman in an end credits scene from Black Adam, Gunn and Safran announced their decision to recast the character as part of their reboot of the DC universe. David Corenswet has been cast as the new Superman, with filming already underway. The film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The cast includes an ensemble of talented actors such as Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan.
James Gunn’s involvement in the DCEU has been met with both excitement and speculation from fans. However, it is important to separate fact from fiction and understand that Gunn’s creative decisions regarding the superhero universe are based on the current circumstances and not long-standing plans to replace actors like Henry Cavill.
