The families of two young girls who tragically lost their lives in a school car crash in Wimbledon have expressed their outrage over the decision not to charge the driver. Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau were killed when a Land Rover crashed through a fence and collided with a building at The Study Prep school in southwest London. The incident occurred during an end-of-term party at the school on the morning of July 6th last year. While more than a dozen people were injured, a 46-year-old woman, Claire Freemantle, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that they would not be pursuing charges against her, leaving the families devastated.
The CPS described the deaths of Nuria and Selena as an “unthinkable tragedy” but revealed that Ms. Freemantle had suffered an epileptic seizure while driving, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. After conducting significant enquiries into the events leading up to the collision, the CPS concluded that the driver had a previously undiagnosed medical condition that led to the seizure. Sajjad Butt, Smera Chohan, Franky Lau, and Jessie Deng, the parents of the young girls, criticized the CPS’ decision, stating that they did not believe a fair and thorough investigation was conducted. They expressed their disappointment, emphasizing that their children were in a supposed safe place celebrating a joyous day.
The grieving families questioned how they were expected to move forward after such a tragic loss. They firmly believed that justice had not been served and that Nuria and Selena deserved better. Despite the CPS explaining their decision based on Ms. Freemantle’s medical records and history, the families remained unconvinced. They felt that the driver could have done more to prevent the incident or seek medical advice before getting behind the wheel.
Ms. Freemantle expressed her deepest sorrow over the deaths of the young girls and stated that she had no recollection of the events after losing consciousness due to the epileptic seizure. She acknowledged the devastating consequences of the incident and expressed her condolences to the families who had suffered such terrible losses. Despite her remorse, the families of Nuria and Selena were left grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy, questioning the justice system and the decision not to prosecute the driver.
The tragic school car crash in Wimbledon has left a scar on the hearts of the families of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau. Their loss has not only raised questions about road safety and medical conditions while driving but has also highlighted the complexities of seeking justice in such cases. As the families continue to mourn their young girls, the decision not to charge the driver has only added to their pain and frustration. It is a reminder of the long road ahead for those affected by such senseless tragedies.
