Google has been diligently working on a new feature for Android 15 known as Private Space. Initially introduced in a report in December 2023, Private Space was thought to simply function as a tool to discreetly hide apps and files from prying eyes. However, recent developments indicate that Google has made significant advancements to this feature since its inception.
Enhanced Security Features
One of the most noteworthy aspects of Private Space is the ability to sign up using a dedicated Google account. This feature allows users to create a completely separate space within their device, ensuring that sensitive information remains isolated. When setting up a new Private Space, users are prompted to enter a dedicated Google account, which helps prevent synced files, photos, and emails from appearing outside the designated space. Additionally, users are required to set a lock pattern or PIN for added security, similar to the default phone lock.
A major development in Private Space is the capability to install apps privately, without them being visible outside of the designated space. Users can download apps within Private Space using the associated Google account. This can be done through a dedicated “install apps” button within the space or by long-pressing an app outside the space and selecting the option to “install in private.” This functionality provides users with enhanced privacy and control over their app usage.
Once created, Private Space appears as a discreet strip at the bottom of the app drawer, adorned with a lock icon for identification. Tapping on the icon prompts the user to enter the password for access to the private space. For added convenience, users have the option to hide the thin strip by navigating to Settings > Security & privacy > Private Space. In case of hidden space, users can search for “Private Space” and tap on the chip that appears to access it. Additionally, users can configure settings within Private Space to enable sensitive notifications on the lock screen, set automatic locking times, change screen lock preferences, and delete the space as needed.

While Google has not officially rolled out Private Space, it is speculated that forthcoming Android 15 beta updates may include this feature.
