The Future of NASCAR: Introducing the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype

NASCAR recently made a groundbreaking move by unveiling a prototype electric race car in partnership with ABB, aimed at reducing emissions and electrifying aspects of the sport. This initiative represents a significant step towards sustainability for an organization that has a legacy rooted in stock car racing.

The ABB NASCAR EV Prototype

The “ABB NASCAR EV Prototype” is a collaborative effort with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, designed to produce 1,000 kW (or 1341 horsepower) at peak power. This electrified stock car features a regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy from braking into electrical power, similar to hybrid or full-electric vehicles on the market.

While NASCAR has no immediate plans to completely abandon combustion engines, the initiative signals a potential exploration of high-performance electric racing in the future. The partnership with ABB will focus on identifying opportunities to electrify various aspects of NASCAR operations, including long-haul transportation, race track operations, and office activities.

Paving the Way for Sustainability

Chris Shigas, head of communications at ABB in the U.S., emphasized the importance of NASCAR’s commitment to decarbonize its operations and reduce its carbon footprint. This partnership not only showcases the potential for electric racing but also serves as a platform to address broader issues around sustainability in the country.

The collaboration between NASCAR and ABB is set to be a multiyear initiative with the goal of transforming operations to be more sustainable. From long-haul trucking to EV charging stations at race tracks, both organizations are committed to setting an example for how companies across the United States can make their operations more environmentally friendly.

Net-Zero Operating Emissions by 2035

Last year, NASCAR announced its ambitious goal of reaching net-zero operating emissions by 2035. This commitment includes prioritizing 100% renewable electricity at owned race tracks and facilities, expanding on-site EV charging infrastructure, and developing sustainable racing fuel. As the organization continues to make strides towards sustainability, the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype represents a significant milestone in the future of stock car racing.
