The Easter getaway is in full swing, with an estimated 2.6 million car journeys predicted to take place on the nation’s roads today. Good Friday is anticipated to be the busiest day for travel during the Easter break, surpassing the expected two million car journeys on Easter Monday and the projected 2.3 million for Saturday and Sunday. According to the Port of Dover’s chief executive Doug Bannister, approximately 20,000 cars are expected to pass through the port between Thursday and Easter Monday. However, challenges have already arisen due to Storm Nelson impacting sailings, causing a backlog overnight.
Despite the obstacles faced by the Port of Dover, tourist vehicles are currently experiencing around a two-hour wait at border controls. Nevertheless, as the crowds begin to thin out from mid-afternoon, the situation is expected to improve. Ferry company Stena Line has reported a 26% increase in bookings on Irish Sea routes for Easter weekend 2023. Additionally, airports are seeing “strong numbers,” with significant departures from various locations such as Stansted, Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Popular international destinations like Turkey, Dubai, the Canary Islands, and Dublin are witnessing a surge in travel interest.
Manchester Airport’s managing director has indicated a 7% increase in expected passenger numbers compared to the previous year. Other airports like Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol, and Liverpool are also preparing for a busy period with substantial growth in departures and passenger numbers. Despite the high volume of travelers, there have been no major delays reported at airports or on rail networks. Some rail lines, including the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Milton Keynes, are closed for engineering or construction work.
As travelers navigate through the Easter weekend, they can expect unsettled weather conditions. The Met Office has forecasted a mix of sunshine and blustery scattered showers, with a possibility of thunderstorms in the southeast on Friday. Deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris anticipates a gradual improvement in the weather following the recent spell of unsettled conditions, highlighting the potential for some sunshine and warmer temperatures as the winds settle. Despite the generally improving weather outlook, the west and southwest regions are likely to experience passing showers, some of which may be heavy and frequent.
