During his tenure, Minter played a pivotal role in guiding Michigan to numerous accomplishments, including their first national title in 26 seasons, two Big Ten championships, and appearances in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Regrettably for Michigan, Minter’s departure comes as he reunites with NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, serving as the team’s defensive coordinator once again.
Jesse Minter’s reunion with Jim Harbaugh was officially announced on Tuesday evening, confirming the reports that he will be the new defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. Additionally, the Chargers are finalizing a deal to hire Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator. Minter’s decision to return to the NFL comes after a season as Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator and three years as a Baltimore Ravens assistant under Harbaugh’s brother, John. The announcement of Minter’s departure was shared on his social media accounts.
In 2022, Jesse Minter was recognized as a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s top assistant coach. His impact on the Michigan defense was evident, as the team led the nation in fewest points allowed per game (13.1 PPG) during his two seasons as coordinator. Additionally, Michigan ranked third nationally in yards per play allowed (4.47). Minter’s expertise and strategic leadership greatly contributed to the team’s defensive success.
Jesse Minter’s coaching journey began in 2011 when he first became a coordinator at Indiana State. He later held the role at Georgia State before making his way to Michigan. Minter’s passion for coaching is deeply rooted in his upbringing, as the son of longtime college coach Rick Minter. With a diverse coaching background, Minter brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Wolverine’s defensive unit.
Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman’s coaching relationship spans over a decade. Roman served as an associate head coach on Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford for two seasons (2009-2010) before following him to the NFL. Roman’s offensive expertise shone through during his time as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, where the team consistently ranked in the top five in rushing yards per game for three consecutive seasons. Roman most recently held the position of offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2019 to 2022, playing a pivotal role in the team’s exceptional rushing offense and quarterback Lamar Jackson’s success.
The Los Angeles Chargers have long struggled with a lackluster rushing attack, failing to rank in the top 10 in average yards per game since 2007. As such, there is hope that Greg Roman’s expertise can turn this situation around. Enhancing the Chargers’ run game will not only alleviate pressure on quarterback Justin Herbert but also benefit the entire offense. General manager Joe Hortiz emphasized the importance of building a strong run game and offensive line to protect the quarterback, citing successful past experiences.
In addition to Jesse Minter, the Chargers are poised to hire Michigan defensive line coach Mike Elston for the same role. Elston, who spent the past two seasons alongside Minter under Jim Harbaugh, previously had an extended stint with Notre Dame. Harbaugh is bringing several key assistants from his alma mater to the Chargers, including strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert. However, it seems that coach Sherrone Moore will be the sole remaining defensive assistant at Michigan under the new coaching regime.
