It has been nearly six years since a day spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was shut down due to the unregulated practice of ‘vampire facials’. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a report detailing five suspected cases of HIV linked to unsanitary procedures at the spa. This highlights the importance of rapid contact tracing and the regulation of invasive beauty treatments.
In the summer of 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health launched an investigation following a report of a woman testing positive for HIV after a facial procedure at the unlicensed spa. It was discovered that the procedure involved drawing blood, separating platelets, and reinjecting them into the skin. Despite limited scientific evidence supporting the benefits of vampire facials, the spa continued to offer the treatment without proper regulation.
During the investigation, several unsafe practices were uncovered at the spa, including the storage of unlabeled blood tubes and injectables in a kitchen refrigerator alongside food. Additionally, unwrapped syringes were found strewn across various surfaces in the facility, posing a serious risk of infection. It was also noted that the spa lacked a proper sterilizing system, further increasing the chances of cross-contamination.
Practitioners in the beauty industry are required to have the appropriate licenses to perform procedures involving blood drawing and injection. However, the spa owner in this case did not possess any of the necessary licenses, leading to the unauthorized and unsafe practice of vampire facials. Furthermore, the spa had no system in place for maintaining client records, making it difficult to track the spread of infections and determine the full extent of the damage.
Ensuring Safety and Accountability
The NMDOH took swift action by testing all 198 clients on record for HIV to ascertain the scope of the issue. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining proper client records and implementing robust safety measures in beauty establishments. Spa owner Maria de Lourdes Ramos De Ruiz faced legal consequences for her actions, pleading guilty to unlicensed practice and being sentenced to jail while also being ordered to pay restitution to those affected.
