Following his recognition as The Associated Press player of the year, Daniels was awarded the Walter Camp national player of the year and the Davey O’Brien Award for being the top quarterback in college football. This remarkable achievement solidifies Daniels’ position as one of the best players in the game. Hailing from San Bernardino, California, Daniels transferred to LSU from Arizona State in 2022 and immediately made his mark on the field. With 4,946 yards in 12 games, he led the nation in total offense, averaging an impressive 412.2 yards per game. His passing ability was equally remarkable, as he threw for 3,812 yards, ranking third nationally, and tied for first with 40 touchdown passes alongside Oregon QB Bo Nix. Daniels’ contribution extended beyond his passing skills, as he also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns, resulting in an impressive combined total of 50 touchdowns, along with a 2-point conversion on a passing play. With his exceptional performance this season, Daniels is now a finalist for the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
Maxwell Award: Michael Penix Jr.
Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. proved himself to be the nation’s best all-around player, winning the Maxwell Award. Penix Jr. led the Huskies into the College Football Playoff with his exceptional talent, passing for 4,218 yards, 33 touchdowns, and only nine interceptions. His remarkable performance on the field showcased his ability to lead his team and make crucial plays when it mattered most. Penix Jr.’s recognition as the top all-around player in the nation is truly well-deserved.
North Carolina State’s Payton Wilson emerged as the top defensive player in college football, winning both the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Dick Butkus Award. Wilson’s impact on the field was truly impressive, as he was involved in 138 tackles for the Wolfpack. With six sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions, Wilson consistently demonstrated his dominance and skill as a defensive powerhouse. Miami (OH)’s Graham Nicholson proved to be the nation’s top placekicker, winning the Lou Groza Award. Earlier this month, Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts was honored as the top defender in college football, winning the Bronko Nagurski Award.
