The Atlanta Falcons have made a strategic move to strengthen their wide receivers group by trading for Los Angeles Rams receiver Van Jefferson. In exchange for the talented wideout, the Falcons sent a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Rams, receiving a seventh-round selection in return.
Van Jefferson, a fourth-year receiver out of Florida, brings valuable experience to the Falcons team. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, he has played in 49 games for the Los Angeles Rams, making 30 starts. Jefferson had an impressive 2021 season, particularly during the Rams’ Super Bowl run, where he started every game. That year, he achieved career highs in targets, catches, yards, and touchdowns.
In the current season, Jefferson has faced challenges securing a significant role due to the emergence of rookie star Puka Nacua and third-year receiver Tutu Atwell. His playing time has been limited, as demonstrated in the recent Rams’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, during which Jefferson was on the field for just two offensive plays. The return of All-Pro Cooper Kupp also impacted the playing time of the Rams’ receiving corps.
Now joining the Atlanta Falcons, Van Jefferson will become a part of a wide receivers group led by Drake London, the Falcons’ first-round pick in 2022, and Mack Hollins, who signed a one-year contract with Atlanta this past offseason. The addition of Jefferson provides another offensive option for second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder, who is coming off the best game of his career. Ridder’s recent performance featured an impressive completion rate, with no interceptions thrown.
The trade for Van Jefferson is a strategic move by the Falcons, presenting a low-risk opportunity with the potential for high reward. This move mirrors the franchise’s earlier trade with the New England Patriots for tight end Jonnu Smith, which has already proven successful. Smith currently leads the Falcons in receiving yards and is tied for the team lead in receptions.
Interestingly, Van Jefferson and Falcons’ tight end Kyle Pitts were teammates for two seasons at the University of Florida. This prior experience playing together could potentially contribute to a successful partnership on the field, further enhancing the Falcons’ offensive capabilities.
