The inaugural LIV Australia tournament held at the Grange Golf Club saw Talor Gooch clinch his first LIV Golf victory by three strokes on Sunday. Despite a bogey-free start, Gooch shot a 1-over 73, dropping his double-digit overnight lead to just two strokes. But he rallied back with birdies at the 11th and 13th holes and made par at the par 4 18th to secure the win and $4 million of the $20 million purse.
Anirban Lahiri Finishes Second
Anirban Lahiri finished second at 16-under after shooting 65, cutting Gooch’s lead to just two strokes with eight holes to play. However, Gooch rallied back with birdies to clinch the win, while Lahiri missed out on victory by three strokes.
Chase Koepka’s Ace and the Most Successful LIV Golf Tournament
Chase Koepka made the shot of the day with an ace at the par-3 12th, which was celebrated wildly by several thousand fans lining the “watering hole.” However, play was delayed for several minutes due to the hundreds of plastic cups and bottles thrown by fans in scenes not commonly associated with golf. The three-day event saw more than 90,000 fans in attendance, making it the most successful edition of the LIV Golf tournaments, now in its second year.
The 14-event season continues next weekend at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore. Phil Mickelson finished in a tie for 11th with a score of 12-under 204 after a 69. Despite this, he remained a clear crowd favorite and was cheered most of the way in his round by another sellout crowd of 35,000 on a warm day at Adelaide’s Grange Golf Club.
