Taiwan on High Alert as China Conducts Missile Tests in Inner Mongolia

Taiwan’s defense ministry announced on Saturday that it is closely monitoring “waves” of missile tests conducted by China in the far northern region of Inner Mongolia. This comes as tensions between the two territories continue to escalate, with China asserting its claim over Taiwan as its own territory.

In response to the missile tests, Taiwan has put its air defense forces on high alert. The defense ministry reported detecting multiple waves of test launches by China’s Rocket Force in Inner Mongolia, which is approximately 2,000 km away from Taiwan. This heightened state of readiness is indicative of the seriousness with which Taiwan is taking these military activities.

China’s display of military prowess, particularly through missile tests aimed in the direction of Taiwan, is seen as a provocative gesture. In August 2022, China launched missiles into the waters surrounding Taiwan during war games, in response to a visit to Taipei by then-Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. These aggressive actions have been met with concern and condemnation from the international community.

Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, who assumed office in May, has been a focal point of China’s ire. Beijing has labeled him a “separatist” and has escalated military pressure on Taiwan since his inauguration. President Lai has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with China, but his offers have been consistently rejected. He maintains that the future of Taiwan should be determined by its people, rejecting China’s claims of sovereignty over the territory.

Taiwan operates powerful radar stations on its central mountain range, allowing it to closely monitor Chinese military activities. The defense ministry has emphasized that it will continue to closely observe developments and remains prepared to respond to any potential threats. China’s Rocket Force, responsible for both conventional and nuclear missile capabilities, poses a significant challenge to Taiwan’s security.

The ongoing missile tests conducted by China in Inner Mongolia have put Taiwan on high alert. The increased military activities in the region have raised tensions between the two territories, with Taiwan responding by maintaining a vigilant stance. As President Lai continues to advocate for Taiwan’s sovereignty and seek dialogue with China, the situation remains precarious. The international community will be closely watching how these events unfold and their potential implications for regional stability.
