In a groundbreaking announcement on Wednesday, Sony Pictures revealed the acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse, a significant player in the North American movie theater scene. This move marks a notable shift in the industry as it is the first time a studio has bought a theater chain since the Department of Justice’s antitrust division lifted the decree prohibiting certain film distributors from owning exhibition companies in 2020.

The Paramount Consent Decrees, established in 1948, mandated major studios to sell off their cinemas, setting a precedent in antitrust regulations within the motion picture industry. For over 70 years, this decree held firm, shaping the landscape of film distribution and exhibition. However, its impact varied among studios, with some being prohibited from reentering the theater business without permission, while others had the opportunity to acquire cinemas in the future.

Under the Sony banner, Columbia Pictures emerged as a strategic player in the theater business, initially taking a minority stake in the Walter Reade Organization in the late ’80s. This move laid the foundation for future acquisitions, including the well-known Lowes Theater. With Alamo Drafthouse now under Sony’s ownership, CEO Michael Kustermann will continue to lead the dine-in movie theater chain.
