Sigourney Weaver Retires From Playing Ellen Ripley in Alien Franchise

Sigourney Weaver has announced that she is done with playing Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise. With a new movie and TV series adaptation in the works, Weaver has ruled out any potential return to space. She believes that there are younger actors who are better suited to play such roles.

Weaver’s Role in Alien Franchise

Weaver originated the role of Ripley in 1979, in Ridley Scott’s Alien. The success of the film led to sequels such as Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997), all starring Weaver. She received an Oscar nomination for her role in Aliens, which was directed by James Cameron.

Respect for Strong Women

Weaver believes that the longevity of Ellen Ripley and Alien is due in part to Ridley Scott’s respect for strong women. The creators made Ripley a woman without making her a helpless creature. Weaver feels fortunate to have been a part of a franchise that respected and liked strong women.

Other Films in Alien Universe

Aside from the Alien franchise, there are other related films in the Alien universe, such as Alien vs. Predator (2004) and its sequel Alien vs Predator: Requiem (2007), as well as the Prometheus films: Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017).

In conclusion, Sigourney Weaver has brought to life the iconic character of Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise. After many years of playing the role, Weaver has decided to retire from it. She believes that there are younger actors who are better suited to play the role of Ripley. Nonetheless, Weaver’s contribution to the franchise will always be remembered.
