North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent visit to Russia has raised concerns among the international community. Accompanied by President Vladimir Putin’s defense minister, Kim inspected various military assets, including nuclear-capable strategic bombers, hypersonic missiles, and warships. The friendly rapport between Russia and North Korea has sparked worries, particularly from the United States and South Korea. They fear that this alliance could potentially provide Kim with access to sensitive missile technology, while simultaneously aiding Russia in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
At Russia’s Knevichi airfield, located approximately 50 km from Vladivostok, Kim was greeted by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who saluted the North Korean leader. A guard of honor was then inspected by Kim, with a smile on his face. Shoigu proceeded to showcase Russia’s strategic bombers, which consist of the Tu-160, Tu-95, and Tu-22M3 models. These bombers, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, form the backbone of Russia’s nuclear air attack force. Shoigu highlighted the range of one aircraft, explaining it could fly from Moscow to Japan and back. Throughout the demonstration, Kim appeared engaged, asking questions about missile launch mechanisms and displaying his approval through occasional nods and smiles.
Shoigu also presented Kim with the MiG-31I supersonic interceptor aircraft, equipped with “Kinzhal” hypersonic missiles. The “Kinzhal,” meaning dagger, is an air-launched ballistic missile with the capability to carry nuclear or conventional warheads. It reportedly possesses a range of 1,500 to 2,000 km and can travel at speeds 10 times faster than the speed of sound. The inclusion of such advanced weaponry in the demonstration adds to the concerns surrounding the military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
After inspecting the aircraft and missiles, Kim proceeded to Vladivostok to observe a demonstration by the Russian navy. He toured a warship belonging to Russia’s Pacific fleet. The public showcasing of these military assets suggests a mutual desire for closer military ties between the two nations.
South Korea and the United States wasted no time in voicing their concerns regarding the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. They argue that such collaboration violates the United Nations’ sanctions against Pyongyang. Both countries have vowed to ensure that there will be consequences for this alliance. Russia, however, has blatantly publicized Kim’s visit and hinted at the possibility of deeper military cooperation. Putin sees this friendship as an opportunity to both challenge Washington and its Asian allies while potentially securing a steady supply of artillery for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
While Washington has accused North Korea of supplying arms to Russia, which already possesses the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear warheads, it remains uncertain whether any actual deliveries have taken place. Kim’s visit to a Russian fighter jet factory, which is currently under Western sanctions, only added to the skepticism surrounding the extent of his cooperation with Russia.
During Kim’s visit, he had discussions with Putin about military matters, the war in Ukraine, and the potential for deepening cooperation between their countries. Putin assured reporters that Russia would not violate any agreements but emphasized the importance of continuing to develop relations with North Korea. Despite this, no formal agreements were planned or signed during Kim’s visit, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
In response to the concerns expressed by the United States, Russian diplomats argued that Washington had no right to lecture Moscow. They pointed out that the United States had been bolstering its allies worldwide, including deploying a nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine to South Korea in July. The criticism and counter-criticism highlight the tense dynamics between these global powers.
