Samsung recently unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S24 series, which introduced a range of innovative features. One standout feature is the Instant Slow-Mo, which allows users to watch recorded videos in slow motion simply by performing a long press on the screen. Previously exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has now announced that it will be expanding this feature to older models as well.
In a recent announcement on the official Samsung community forum in South Korea, a moderator revealed that eight older Samsung smartphones will soon support the Instant Slow-Mo feature. These devices include the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The post explained that the feature requires a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with a minimum processing speed of 16.6 milliseconds for 60fps videos, which is only available in devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Therefore, it is unlikely that phones running on older or less powerful processors will receive this feature.
Understanding the Instant Slow-Mo Feature
Samsung describes the Instant Slow-Mo feature as “time zoom.” According to the post, this feature works similarly to spatial zoom in still images, where users can stretch the image to see finer details. In the case of slow-motion videos, Samsung stretches the time interval between each frame, allowing users to see the motion’s finer details and creating the perception of slowed-down footage. This feature enhances the viewing experience and enables users to capture and appreciate specific moments more closely.
The official post did not specify when the Instant Slow-Mo feature would be available for older Samsung handsets. However, there are reports suggesting that it may arrive in the upcoming One UI 6.1 update, which is expected to roll out next month. Currently, the Instant Slow-Mo feature supports 8-bit videos shot between 720p to 8K resolution and in the MP4 file format. Samsung also mentioned its intention to enhance the feature further, with plans to add support for 10-bit videos shot in 480p resolution and the MOV file format.
The expansion of the Instant Slow-Mo feature to older Samsung smartphones is an exciting development for users who want to enjoy the benefits of slow-motion videos without the need for complicated editing or recording processes. Samsung’s commitment to improving this feature and expanding its capabilities demonstrates the company’s dedication to providing an exceptional user experience. As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the One UI 6.1 update, Samsung users can look forward to capturing and reliving memorable moments with the enhanced Instant Slow-Mo feature.
