Mike Flanagan in Talks to Direct Next Exorcist Film

There have been reports that renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is currently in talks to direct the next installment of The Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. This news comes after David Gordon Green exited the project earlier this year. Flanagan, known for his work on projects like The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, would be taking over the reins for this iconic horror franchise if a deal is made.

While the original plan after Universal and Blumhouse acquired the rights to The Exorcist was to develop at least three new films, it is unclear at this point whether Flanagan would be on board for more than one installment. The first film in the trilogy, The Exorcist: Believer, starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn, did not meet box office expectations when it was released last year.

David Gordon Green, who was initially set to direct the second Exorcist film, stepped down from the project earlier this year. His departure led to the postponement of the sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was originally slated for release in 2025. Green has since moved on to other projects, including the film Nutcrackers and the TV series The Righteous Gemstones.

Mike Flanagan, known for his adaptations of Stephen King’s works like Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, has built a name for himself in the horror genre. His previous projects, including Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher and the popular series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, have received critical acclaim. Flanagan’s collaboration with producer Trevor Macy through Intrepid Pictures has produced several successful films and series in the horror genre.

With Flanagan’s potential involvement in the next Exorcist film, fans are eager to see how he will bring his unique vision to this classic horror franchise. As negotiations continue, details about the plot and cast of the upcoming film remain under wraps. However, Flanagan’s reputation for creating atmospheric and chilling stories has many excited for the future of The Exorcist series. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated project.
