Michigan Expected to Offer Offensive Coordinator Sherrone Moore Head Coaching Job

After Jim Harbaugh’s departure as head coach of the University of Michigan football team, the program has turned its attention to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Sherrone Moore. Multiple sources have revealed that Moore is likely to be offered the head coaching position, pending any unforeseen circumstances. Harbaugh, who has been at the helm for nine seasons, recently accepted the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers, signing a five-year contract.

Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, wasted no time in expressing his commitment to finding a suitable replacement for Harbaugh. In an official statement, Manuel assured that they were diligently working to hire the next head coach for the football program. Additionally, Manuel emphasized the importance of maintaining the current coaching staff and team unity during this transition period.

Sherrone Moore, 37, has emerged as a strong candidate for the head coaching role at Michigan. Serving as Harbaugh’s interim replacement for four games this season, Moore demonstrated his capability and potential. Notably, the Wolverines secured impressive victories over No. 10 Penn State and arch-rival Ohio State during Moore’s temporary tenure. These successes contributed to Michigan’s third consecutive Big Ten championship appearance.

Moore’s Contributions to Michigan Football

Having been a part of the Michigan staff for the past six seasons, Moore has made significant contributions to the program both as a position coach and a coordinator. He initially served as the tight ends coach before taking on the role of offensive line coach in 2021 and 2022. Under Moore’s guidance, the Michigan offensive line was awarded the prestigious Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in college football for two consecutive seasons. In 2023, Moore took on the additional responsibilities of offensive coordinator, leading the Wolverines to an unbeaten season and a 14th national ranking in scoring offense, with an average of 35.9 points per game.

Solid Support from Players

One notable aspect of Moore’s candidacy is the overwhelming support he has received from Michigan’s players. All-American offensive lineman Zak Zinter expressed his trust and enthusiasm for Moore, declaring that “It’s Papa Moore’s time.” This endorsement from a key member of the team highlights the strong rapport Moore has built with the players over the years.

Acknowledging Harbaugh’s contributions to the program, both University of Michigan president Santa Ono and athletic director Warde Manuel expressed gratitude for his dedication and success. It was revealed that discussions had taken place regarding a new contract that would have made Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in college football. However, despite his departure, Harbaugh’s impact as a player and coach will forever be engrained in the history of Michigan Football.

Harbaugh’s decision to leave Michigan is just one of several recent coaching changes in the world of college football. With Nick Saban retiring from Alabama and Kalen DeBoer departing from Washington for Alabama, three out of the four head coaches from last season’s College Football Playoff will be coaching new teams in the upcoming season. Harbaugh’s exit also reduces the number of active FBS head coaches with national championships to just three: Kirby Smart of Georgia, Dabo Swinney of Clemson, and Mack Brown of North Carolina.

As the search for a new head coach reaches its conclusion, the University of Michigan will undoubtedly be focused on maintaining the success and momentum of the football program. With Sherrone Moore as a potential candidate, Michigan hopes to transition smoothly and build upon the strong foundation established by Harbaugh. The next chapter in Michigan Football’s history promises to be an exciting one as the team looks to continue competing for Big Ten championships and national recognition.
