Idalia hit Florida’s Gulf Coast as a devastating Category 3 hurricane, hitting the small town of Keaton Beach on the Big Bend Coast. This region is located less than 90 miles southeast of Tallahassee, the state capital. The storm brought with it maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, causing significant damage and flooding in its path.
One of the most concerning aspects of Idalia’s impact was the rapid surge in the river gauge at Steinhatchee. Within just one hour, the river rose from 1 foot to 8 feet, highlighting the dangerous storm surges associated with the hurricane. Once the hurricane weakened and the conditions improved, Governor DeSantis assured the public that rescue operations would commence promptly. The state had already mobilized eight urban search and rescue teams and over 5,000 members of the National Guard to aid in relief efforts. Additionally, the Coast Guard was on standby to provide assistance whenever required.
Impacted Travel and Further Forecast
In response to the approaching storm, American Airlines suspended operations in several Florida cities, including Tampa, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Savannah, Georgia. A total of 167 flights were canceled, disrupting travel plans for many passengers. However, the airline planned to continue normal operations in other cities such as Ft. Myers, Key West, Orlando, and Daytona Beach.
Looking ahead, Idalia is expected to weaken further as it moves inland. It will likely remain a hurricane as it passes through southeastern Georgia and southern South Carolina in the afternoon or evening. However, the storm is anticipated to diminish into a tropical storm as it approaches the coast of North Carolina on Wednesday night and Thursday.
In anticipation of Hurricane Idalia’s impact, President Joe Biden granted an emergency declaration, enabling coordination of disaster relief efforts by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
