Georgia prosecutor to announce charging decisions in Trump election interference probe this summer

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has stated that she will announce charging decisions in the election-interference probe of former President Donald Trump and his allies this summer. The announcement is expected to be made during the Fulton County Superior Court’s fourth term, which begins on July 11th and ends on September 1st.

The criminal investigation began two years ago after allegations of meddling in Georgia’s 2020 election surfaced. The investigation was initiated a few weeks after Trump had urged Georgia officials to “find” enough votes to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the state.

Willis has warned local law enforcement of the potential for a significant public reaction to her announcement and has emphasized the need for heightened security and preparedness in the coming months. “Open-source intelligence has indicated the announcement of decisions in this case may provoke a significant public reaction,” Willis said in a letter to Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat.

Trump, who is currently leading the Republican 2024 presidential primary field, surrendered to law enforcement in New York City earlier this month as part of a separate criminal probe by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He has pleaded not guilty to dozens of counts of falsifying business records in that case, which centers on multiple hush money payments made in 2016 to two women who alleged they had affairs with Trump years earlier.

Willis had previously stated in January that charging decisions in her probe were “imminent.” A special grand jury hearing evidence in the investigation has reportedly recommended charges against multiple people. The grand jury’s final report, made public in February, revealed that the panel believed one or more witnesses may have lied under oath.

Trump is also facing two federal criminal probes being overseen by special counsel Jack Smith.
