The tablet market in India is facing significant challenges as it witnessed a decline of 22 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2023, according to a report by CyberMedia Research (CMR). This news comes as a blow to the tech industry, raising concerns about the future prospects of tablets in the Indian market.
CMR’s Tablet PC market report highlighted the sharp decline in tablet shipments during the second quarter of 2023. This decline can be attributed to various factors such as the increasing popularity of smartphones with larger screens and the emergence of alternative devices like foldable phones and laptops.
Despite the overall decline, Apple managed to maintain its lead in the tablet market with a marginally higher share than Samsung. The report revealed that both Apple and Samsung witnessed a six percent growth in tablet shipments during the quarter. However, Apple secured the top position with a 25.38 percent market share, closely followed by Samsung at 25.31 percent. This indicates that Apple’s premium offerings continue to attract consumers despite the challenging market conditions.
While Apple and Samsung fared relatively well, other players faced significant challenges during the second quarter of 2023. Lenovo, for instance, experienced a steep decline of 30 percent in tablet shipments. Despite this decline, Lenovo managed to secure the third spot with a 23 percent market share. Realme, on the other hand, witnessed a decline of more than 50 percent, resulting in an 8 percent market share. Xiaomi, however, saw a remarkable growth of 155 percent and captured a 6 percent market share.
One promising aspect of the report is the growth of 5G tablets, which showed a 7 percent year-on-year increase. With the advent of 5G technology, tablets have the potential to offer faster and more seamless connectivity, opening up new opportunities for applications such as gaming. CyberMedia Research Analyst, Menka Kumari, stated, “The remarkable speed and minimal latency of 5G herald fresh prospects for tablet gaming.” This indicates that 5G tablets may become a key driver for market recovery and growth in the coming years.
Foldable devices have emerged as a potential game-changer in the tablet market. CMR’s report highlights that the advent of foldables has bridged the gap between conventional tablets and laptops, offering a unique blend of portability and productivity. Foldable devices provide a larger screen real estate while maintaining their compact form factor, making them appealing to consumers who seek enhanced productivity on the go. The introduction of foldables could potentially bring a much-needed boost to the tablet market in India.
The declining tablet market in India raises concerns for the tech industry, but there are also opportunities for growth and recovery. While overall tablet shipments have declined, Apple’s strong performance and the promising growth of 5G tablets provide a glimmer of hope. Additionally, the emergence of foldable devices offers a new avenue for innovation and consumer interest. As the market continues to evolve, it is crucial for tablet manufacturers and industry players to adapt their strategies and offerings to meet the changing demands of consumers.
