On Friday, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike released an update that resulted in a major outage affecting businesses worldwide. The company revealed to NBC that they are currently working on rolling back the update to address the issue. It is important to note that this outage was not caused by a hack or any malicious activity. Despite this clarification, there were widespread reports of technical difficulties across various industries.
One of the significant consequences of CrowdStrike’s update problem was the direct impact on Windows systems globally. Many laptops experienced an error screen commonly referred to as the “blue screen of death.” CrowdStrike acknowledged the crashes on Windows hosts related to their Falcon Sensor in a recorded phone message. This issue not only disrupted individual users but also had a ripple effect on larger businesses and industries.
Numerous sectors reported disruptions as a result of the update problem. Airlines, banks, telecom companies, and financial institutions encountered various issues on Friday. For instance, American Airlines indicated that a technology issue was affecting multiple carriers, while the Dutch arm of Air France-KLM had to suspend most of its operations. Similarly, Spain’s airport authority AENA warned travelers about delays due to a computer system incident. Furthermore, the London Stock Exchange encountered technical difficulties with its data and news platform.
The CrowdStrike update problem had far-reaching consequences for businesses globally. Allianz, a German finance giant, highlighted a major outage that affected employees’ ability to log into their computers. This disruption was not limited to Allianz but also impacted other companies, specifically affecting the Windows login process. Visa reported that while its payment processing was not significantly impacted, there were reports of individuals struggling to complete transactions. NBC Universal was also among the companies affected by the CrowdStrike outage.
Omer Grossman, the CIO at cybersecurity firm CyberArk, emphasized the severe repercussions of the outage. He attributed the glitch to a software update of CrowdStrike’s EDR product, which plays a critical role in protecting endpoints with high privileges. Grossman noted that resolving this issue would be challenging as the crashed endpoints could not be updated remotely. He anticipated a manual resolution process that would likely take several days to complete.
