In the midst of escalating tensions between Israel and Palestine, China has urged Israel to cease its collective punishment of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip. As Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled throughout the Middle East to mitigate the possibility of a wider war, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed the international community’s call to Israel to halt its punitive measures.
Last week, the Hamas militant group launched its most severe attack on Israel since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,400 individuals, predominantly civilians. In response, Israel has conducted relentless airstrikes in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 2,670 Palestinians and subjecting the region to severe shortages of essential resources like food, water, fuel, and electricity.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that Israel’s actions have surpassed the boundaries of self-defense and called upon Israel to comply with the United Nations Secretary-General’s plea to cease its collective punishment of the people in Gaza. Wang further emphasized that any exercise of the right to self-defense should adhere to international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of innocent civilian lives.
These statements were made during separate discussions with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, signaling China’s commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza and advocating for a peaceful resolution.
As countries and world leaders sought to prevent a complete escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict into a larger crisis in the Middle East, Secretary of State Antony Blinken embarked on a diplomatic mission through seven countries in the region.
In his visits to Israel, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, Blinken aimed to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue. However, Iran’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, warned that if Israel’s siege of Gaza persisted, the conflict would inevitably intensify.
Secretary Blinken acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense and emphasized its obligation to safeguard its citizens from attacks by Hamas. Nonetheless, he stressed the importance of conducting defensive actions in a manner that upholds shared values of human life and dignity.
Blinken specifically called for Israel to exercise caution and take all possible measures to prevent harm to innocent civilians, aligning his message with that of President Joe Biden. Both leaders emphasized the significance of preserving human life throughout any defensive actions taken in response to the conflict.
Despite the ongoing crisis, Secretary Blinken’s diplomatic efforts have yielded some positive outcomes. Egypt has agreed to open its borders, allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza starting at 9 a.m. local time on Monday. Additionally, Palestinians with foreign passports are now permitted to cross Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, facilitating their departures via Cairo to their final destinations.
Understanding the severity of the situation in Gaza, President Biden appointed former ambassador David Satterfield as the Special Envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues. This appointment showcases the United States’ commitment to addressing the urgent needs of the region and finding a resolution to the crisis.
Additionally, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended an invitation to President Biden to visit Israel as a symbol of solidarity in the midst of the ongoing conflict. The White House is currently considering this invitation, demonstrating its willingness to engage with Israel directly and collaborate on finding a path towards peace.
