An eclectic selection of fiction and non-fiction titles were curated by Ania Trzebiatowska for the third annual Sands International Film Festival that began on a Friday evening in St. Andrews, Scotland. Taking place over the weekend in the historic university town, Trzebiatowska, who is also a full-time programmer at Sundance, spearheads the festival with a team of part-time student programmers from the University of St. Andrews. The festival is a collaboration with Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO, with the filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo having a personal connection to St. Andrews through Joe’s eldest daughter.
The Russos were present at the festival, expressing their admiration for the town and its vibrant atmosphere. Joe Russo commended the warmth of the residents and the enthusiasm of the students, emphasizing how it enhances the festival experience. Actor Tom Holland also graced the event, accompanying his younger brother Harry, who presented their short film “Last Call.” The audience at The Byre Theatre was captivated by the poignant story of a mother’s quest to reconnect with her son, as portrayed by Holland and Lindsay Duncan.
Harry Holland revealed that he drew inspiration for “Last Call” while working on his brother’s film, reflecting on his personal struggles with mental health during the creative process. The short film, which touches on themes of emotional well-being, resonated with the audience and left a lasting impact. Furthermore, the festival showcased Naqqash Khalid’s debut feature “In Camera,” as well as Anna Hints’ Sundance-winning documentary “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” and Daisy Ridley’s “Sometimes I Think About Dying.”
Among the featured films was the Russo brothers’ lesser-known comedy “Welcome to Collinwood,” starring George Clooney, William H. Macy, and Sam Rockwell. The movie, produced by Steven Soderbergh, will be discussed in an on-stage Q&A session with the Russos and Soderbergh, marking a significant moment in their professional journey. Soderbergh, who played a pivotal role in their career advancement, is set to provide valuable insights into the filmmaking process and industry dynamics.
As the Sands International Film Festival progresses, attendees can anticipate engaging discussions, thought-provoking screenings, and valuable interactions with industry experts. The festival serves as a tribute to the art of cinema, fostering a creative environment for emerging talents and established filmmakers alike. Through its diverse lineup and collaborative spirit, the festival aims to celebrate the magic of storytelling and inspire future generations of filmmakers.
