Big George Foreman is a film that tells the story of George Foreman – from a dirt-poor Texas kid with a powerful punch to a good-natured businessman and man of God. The film portrays Foreman’s journey from being a small-time criminal to a famous boxer, thanks to a perceptive scout and trainer, Doc Broadus (Forest Whitaker). Foreman’s potential was noticed by Broadus, who got him off the streets and into the gym, where he honed his skills and eventually became a heavyweight champion.
Boxing Legends
The film also touches on the heavyweight division, which was dominated by Muhammad Ali until his title was yanked in 1967 for refusing induction into the military. During Ali’s absence from boxing, Ernie Terrell, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman stood atop the heavyweight division. Foreman’s career culminated in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” fight against Ali in Zaire in 1974.
The film features realistic ring action and accurately depicts well-remembered bouts that boxing fans still re-watch at home.
The Challenges of Family Life
While the film covers Foreman’s career and some aspects of his private life, it does not delve into the challenges of his family life. Foreman had 12 children, four wives, and many other women in his life. While the film briefly shows Foreman’s family, it does not tackle the real modus vivendi of the Foreman family. The film offers a sanitized and truncated version of Foreman’s full story, and a miniseries might have told the tale in a fuller and more multifaceted way.
In summary, Big George Foreman is a reasonably engaging “inspired by real events” melodrama that features Foreman’s rise to fame and his engaging personality. Boxing fans will certainly enjoy the ring action on display, but interested parties will have to consult the record books to trace the overlapping careers of Foreman, Ali, Frazier, and others. The film offers a classically American rags-to-riches story, but it could have been much deeper and more revealing about achieving your dreams young and how you deal with it.
