The patent (US 20240147644 A1) showcases an intriguing hinge design for a smaller or compact foldable device, possibly a Plus or Max-sized iPhone or an iPad Mini. Apple’s design includes a hinge mechanism that holds together the two halves of the chassis through synchronized gear plates with interlocked teeth, ensuring smooth opening and closing of the device while protecting the inner folding display.
Comparing Apple’s hinge design with existing foldable smartphones, it becomes apparent that Apple’s mechanism is more intricate and thicker.
