Apple Unveils Spatial Computer with Guest Mode for Multiple Users

Apple recently unveiled its first-ever spatial computer, the Apple Vision Pro, at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The device is a mixed reality headset that can support both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) content. The Apple Vision Pro features EyeSight, a sensor that enables users to view their surroundings, and a dial that allows them to switch between AR and VR modes. The company also released the visionOS SDK to help developers build apps for the headset. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the Apple Vision Pro will have a “guest” mode that will enable multiple users to experience the device while protecting the owner’s data.

Guest Mode

The guest mode on the Apple Vision Pro will allow people to use the device, even if it’s registered to a specific user. The owner of the device will be able to enable or disable this feature. Additionally, the owner can secure the headset, preventing guest users from accessing certain applications or settings without Optic ID, a security feature that scans the wearer’s iris for biometric authentication. With the Apple Vision Pro priced at $3,499, it’s unlikely that more than one person in a household will invest in the device. Therefore, the guest mode might be useful to Vision Pro owners, allowing multiple people to experience the device while protecting the owner’s data.

Optic ID

The report suggests that the Apple Vision Pro will enable owners to lock hidden and deleted photos or other files using Optic ID. This feature is similar to Touch ID or Face ID-based protection used to protect specific folders in the Photos app on an iPhone. The Optic ID will scan the wearer’s iris for biometric authentication, ensuring that only the owner can access the locked photos or files.

The Apple Vision Pro is set to go on sale next year via the Apple website and retail stores in the US. It’s unclear whether the device will be launched in other markets, including India. With the steep price, it’s safe to say that not everyone will opt to buy the Apple Vision Pro, and it’s unlikely that more than one person in a household will invest in the device. Therefore, the guest mode might be a useful feature for Vision Pro owners, enabling multiple people to experience the device while protecting the owner’s data. We can expect to learn more about the guest mode and other features of the Apple Vision Pro in the coming months before it goes on sale next year.
