Apple Original Films has made a significant acquisition, securing worldwide rights to the new film “Tenzing.” This film tells the inspirational true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and his historic summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Edmund Hillary. The project is being produced by the Oscar-winning production company See-Saw Films, known for their work on “The King’s Speech.”
The film stars Tom Hiddleston as Sir Edmund Hillary, Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt, and a lead actor yet to be cast as Tenzing Norgay. Director Jennifer Peedom, who has an exclusive relationship with Tenzing’s family, is helming the project. The script is penned by Oscar-nominated writer Luke Davies.
Filming for “Tenzing” is set to begin in spring 2025, with a budget estimated to be around $25M. While the film will feature climbing sequences, it is described as more of a character-driven piece rather than an action-packed adventure. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Mount Everest was a monumental achievement, defying the odds and pushing the limits of human capability.
The film will explore Tenzing’s journey, his interactions with his fellow climbers, and his deep spiritual connection to the mountain he aims to conquer. Despite facing challenges such as politics and severe weather conditions, Tenzing approaches his climb with humor, warmth, and respect for the sacred aspects of the mountain. Through his perseverance and determination, Tenzing embodies the spirit of adventure and human resilience.
Overall, the acquisition of “Tenzing” by Apple Original Films highlights the growing interest in true stories of triumph and perseverance. The cast and crew attached to the project bring a wealth of talent and experience, promising a compelling and emotionally resonant cinematic experience for audiences around the world.
