Amazon is making a concerted effort to boost India’s merchandise exports to $20 billion by 2025. By adding thousands of small sellers to its e-commerce platform, the company hopes to tap into the growing demand for Indian products. Despite a decline in India’s goods exports, Amazon sees great potential in categories such as beauty, apparel, home, kitchen, furniture, and toys.
Bhupen Wakankar, the Director of Global Trade at Amazon, expressed his optimism about the number of entrepreneurs who have joined the platform this year. Amazon has successfully onboarded over 100,000 small-scale manufacturers, many of whom are first-time exporters. These individuals have left their corporate jobs to venture into the world of e-commerce exports. Thanks to Amazon’s logistics support and access to millions of Amazon Prime members worldwide, these exporters have experienced an annual business growth rate of 70 percent.
The “Made in India” label has gained popularity in the global market. Organic health supplements, bath towels, jute rugs, and robotic games for children are among the top-selling products. As the holiday season approaches, Indian products have seen a surge in sales in countries such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Germany. Festivities like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year have further boosted the demand for Indian goods in international markets.
Amazon Global Trade, the business-to-consumer (B2C) exports platform launched by Amazon in 2015, has gained significant traction in India. The platform has been instrumental in connecting small exporters with global markets, which were previously inaccessible to them. By providing logistics support and access to more than 200 million Amazon Prime members worldwide, Amazon has created a conducive environment for small-scale Indian exporters to flourish.
India’s overall goods exports have declined by 7 percent year-on-year during the first seven months of this fiscal year. However, the e-commerce platform has witnessed the highest growth in categories like beauty, apparel, home, kitchen, furniture, and toys. Amazon’s initiatives to encourage exporters include slashing the subscription fees for its global selling program from $120 to just $1. This move is expected to attract and enable more sellers to expand their exports globally.
With the aim of boosting Indian exports to $20 billion by 2025, Amazon is actively supporting small-scale manufacturers and entrepreneurs. By providing them with access to global markets and logistical assistance, Amazon has seen a significant increase in business growth for these exporters. The demand for “Made in India” products is on the rise, especially during key holidays, driving sales in major markets around the world.
