On a tragic Sunday at the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan, Israeli officials reported that three people were shot and killed. The perpetrator approached the Allenby Bridge Crossing from the Jordanian side in a truck and opened fire at Israeli security forces. A shootout ensued and the assailant was killed. The victims, all Israeli civilians, were men in their 50s according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service.
Jordan, which made peace with Israel in 1994, is currently investigating the shooting. The country, with a large Palestinian population, has been critical of Israel’s policies towards the Palestinians. Mass protests against Israel have been a common sight in Jordan over the war in Gaza. The Allenby crossing over the Jordan River is a key route used by Israelis, Palestinians, and international tourists.
The Israeli-occupied West Bank has witnessed a surge in violence after Hamas’ attack out of Gaza in October. Israel has conducted frequent military arrest raids in densely populated Palestinian areas. Moreover, there has been an increase in settler violence and attacks on Israelis by Palestinians, escalating tensions in the region.
In a separate incident, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza resulted in the deaths of five people, including two women, two children, and a senior official in the Civil Defense. The strike targeted the home of the deputy director for north Gaza in the Jabaliya refugee camp. The Civil Defense operates under the Hamas-run government in Gaza and carries out critical rescue operations.
The ongoing war in Gaza has led to vast destruction and inflicted a heavy toll on the civilian population. The Health Ministry in Gaza reported that over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, with no differentiation made between fighters and civilians in the count. The conflict has displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population, causing immense suffering.
Various countries, including the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, have been engaged in negotiations to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas-led militants. Despite months of efforts, the talks have faced numerous obstacles and have yet to yield a lasting peace agreement.
The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians dates back to the 1967 Mideast war when Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza, and east Jerusalem. These territories are sought by the Palestinians for a future state. The blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt since 2007 has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region, leading to further tensions and violence.
